Members’ hard work led to a very successful club year
By Karla A. Seijas, President,
scfshpresident@gmail.com
Spouses,
I want to thank you for making me our club’s Volunteer of the Year.
I am truly honored and want to invite you to attend the Fort Sam
Houston Volunteer of the Year ceremony and reception on May 2nd from
10am - 12pm at the Fort Sam Houston Club.
This year because of all your hard work we have been able to
accomplish a lot for our club. We started the year giving back
to the community by donating back to school supplies to military
children, we distributed meals to one hundred thirty military
families for the holidays, gift wrapped at the PX, brought back the
tradition of a Fort Sam Houston holiday bazaar after many years,
donated items to wounded warriors at Wilford Hall, had dining
fundraisers to benefit our scholarship and welfare fund and are on
track to open a Thrift Store at Fort Sam Houston this summer.
None of this would be possible without your volunteer hours and
support. Our membership has increased more than last year and
this year we are on track to give more in scholarship and welfare
awards than we have in over five years!
I want to encourage you to renew your membership for the 2012-2013
club year in May. There will be a drawing at the May luncheon
in which one lucky winner will win a $100 gift card to Fleming’s
Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar.
Lastly, I want to thank you for your support of me as a new military
spouse and as President of our wonderful club. I have learned
so much from each and every one of you and will definitely miss Fort
Sam Houston as we travel in July to our new home at Fort Benning,
GA. I feel very fortunate to have met you all and to have had
the opportunity to learn from such wonderful spouses. You
truly are amazing!
See you soon!

Scholarship, Welfare monies to be awarded and new
officers installed at May luncheon
By Elsa Bennett, 2nd Vice President Co-Chair
As most of you know, the awarding of scholarship and welfare money
is one of our club’s principal directives. All the fundraising
we do throughout the year is with the end goal to give it back to
our community in the form of scholarships and monetary contributions
to non-profits. The May meeting is our final meeting of the
year. It’s also when we have the opportunity to see what we’ve
worked so hard for all year long come to fruition. Of course
it’s only fitting that the “fruits” of our labor be celebrated on
the beautiful and colorful grounds of the San Antonio Botanical
Gardens.
Anne Marie’s Carriage House Bistro at the gardens is catering a
buffet lunch consisting of Carved Sirloin with Mushroom Wine Sauce,
Herb & Parmesan-Breaded Chicken with Mornay Sauce, Garlic Mashers
and a Green Bean & Carrot Blend. The price is $20, payable at
the door. Upon arriving at the gardens, please enter through the
main door. Go left through the restaurant to the outdoor tent.
In addition to delicious food and our Scholarship/Welfare program,
this afternoon will also present the opportunity to watch the
installation of the Spouses’ Club’s newest officers as they step
forward to begin a year of much-appreciated service.
Current members will also have the opportunity to renew their
membership for next year’s Spouses’ Club. Members who pay for
the renewal at May’s meeting will have their name put into a drawing
for a gift certificate to a local upscale restaurant.
This luncheon is also the final time this year to shop the Club’s
Ways and Means items. Take advantage of this chance to
purchase a special farewell gift or souvenir such as our custom Ft.
Sam blankets or silver clock tower charms. Please RSVP no
later than 5pm on Wednesday, May 9th to
scfshreservations@gmail.com

Fort Sam Houston ends MWR bingo, SC fundraiser
For more than 23 years, MWR has hosted bingo games at Fort Sam
Houston for the enjoyment of DOD ID card holders. MWR also
allowed our club as well as the NCO Wives’ Club to sell a few bingo
games during their event as a fundraiser. We have earned
thousands of dollars for our Welfare and Scholarship accounts from
these bingo card sales and the money raised has helped many
organizations on post and college students over the years!
Unfortunately, bingo at Ft. Sam is no longer in the MWR budget and
will not be returning as originally planned. Although this
will be a great loss for all involved, we are very grateful Fort Sam
Houston ends MWR bingo fundraiser for the opportunity we were given
for so long!!
Many thanks to all the volunteers who gave generously of their time
to make this fundraiser a success!! Because of your
dedication, the Spouses’ Club was able to help many others in our
military community. You all did a terrific job and can be
proud of what was accomplished. Thanks so very much from the
bottom of my heart!! Your Final in a long line of Bingo
Chairpersons

New Fort Sam Houston Thrift Shop becoming reality
Hello, all! The legal department has approved our
Constitution and By-Laws, but has stipulated that we need general
liability insurance. So we are working on getting that in
place. In the meanwhile, the Thrift Shop Committee met on
Thursday, April 19, to work on revisions of several documents needed
for the day- to-day operations of the Thrift Shop. I am still
looking for a co-chairperson to work with me.
Also, if anyone is interested in volunteering for the Bookkeeper,
Recording Secretary, and Donations Chairperson, please let me know.
